In my classroom the preschoolers hear, “Pinch your pencil please!” a lot. We’re working on pinching our markers, crayons, pencils, and pens to promote the correct handwriting position as their fine motor skills strengthen.
A fun way to encourage the little ones to hold their pencils correctly while practicing handwriting and the letters in their names, was to add mittens to the activity! My preschoolers have been wearing mittens all month – during ice castle play, circle time, while reading our mitten books, and even to find matching mittens on their friends.
The kids wore their mittens to protect their little hands from the cold and wrote or traced their names, depending on what writing level group they fell into. It was a fun activity that was repeated in our writing center throughout the week independently.
