Dr. Seuss’ birthday is a great excuse for some extra fun learning games! Preschoolers love to learn through play and when there is rhyming involved, it’s even more inviting!
After reading One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, I set up a color game for my preschoolers to play. Different colored fish were hidden around our classroom. Each child got a turn to find a fish and bring it back to the carpet. Before going off to search though, we all chanted:
“One Fish, Two Fish
Red Fish, Blue Fish
Now it’s time to
Find a new fish!”
As the excitement built in the classroom, the whole class chanted the rhyme until we got to “Find a…” and then the child whose turn it was proudly yelled, “NEW FISH!” before running off to search! As each colored fish was found and identified, it was brought back to our group. We began adding the fish to a simple graph in the classroom, dividing them into colored rows. The preschoolers were able to sort and organize by color. We talked about how many total fish there were, how many individual colors there were, more, less, most, and least. It was so fun, that the class insisted we play again!
The second time we played, the preschoolers brought the fish back to match a color on our carpet AND identify the letter. At this point in the year, my 3’s are doing a fabulous job with letter recognition too!
Our One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish inspired learning games can be adapted to fit any age level – toddlers through preschoolers! In just one day we played 2 different versions!
Simply cut out different colored fish out of any paper, hide them around the classroom or house, and play! Don’t forget to recite the rhyming chant before each fish is found!

Brilliant ideas. We recently had lots of fun doing learning activities to Dr Seuss' Ten apples up top. I think the rhymes really encourage participation. X
