Rainbow Writing in Preschool

My preschoolers love to show off their skills lately, so they were more than eager to practice writing on our new Rainbow Writing windows!  This new activity was easy to set up in just a few minutes with supplies we already had in the classroom.

The kids practiced writing letters, writing their names, and drawing each other.  The activity ended up being the most popular independent learning activity all week!  We never mind getting messy while learning in my classroom, but this activity allowed writing with paint, without clean-up of any kind.

Rainbow Writing “preschool-style” allows preschoolers to write and identify letters, numbers, shapes, and colors.  Fine motor muscles are strengthened when their little fingers are are writing and erasing {squishing the bags to mix up the colors again!} their creations.  It invites the kiddos to practice skills that they may have not mastered in a stress-free way that is fun with no pressure.

The preschoolers were excited when they realized that colors were mixing together and it made the writing activity even more inviting!  After a full morning of Rainbow Writing, the colors in each ziploc were almost mixed completely.  Using primary colors in the ziploc bags gave the preschoolers a hands-on learning experience about mixing colors and creating secondary colors {with no paintbrushes to clean!}.

This activity will definitely stick around for a while!

Rainbow Writing Supplies:
  • paint
  • ziploc-type freezer bags (any size!)
  • painters tape
Add the paint into the bags.  I found that not much is needed and initially added too much.  Slowly squeeze all the extra air out while the bag is flat.  Seal the bag – and then double check the seal!  Tape up on the window across the top of the bag.

The kids in my classroom are asked now given a task to complete on our Rainbow Writing windows before we line up or switch activities.  They are asked to write on a specific color, to pick a letter from their name, write how old they are, etc.  It’s an easy way to quickly assess the preschoolers!
