ACTIVITY: Rainbow Rice Hunt!

My preschoolers like nothing better than to stick their little fingers into rice.  There is something so soothing about it, that our rice bins get a lot of love!  We have been learning about the letter Rr and rainbows, so our rainbow rice was the perfect addition to our learning.

Making colored rice is as simple as making colored noodles, but may take a few extra shakes when mixing the color.  I use leftover yogurt containers with the lids to easily make colored rice.
Our rainbow rice was added to a bin with a lid in my classroom on top of small red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple small objects.  When the kids came in that morning, the colored rainbows were spread out on the table around the rainbow rice.  The preschoolers hunted for the objects and separated them out on the colored rainbows.
This is a super fun hunting and sorting activity for toddlers and preschoolers!
Rainbow Rice Hunt Supplies:
  • Colored Rice – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple
  • Small Objects – magnet letters, shapes, sorting bears, pom poms, small toys
  • Printable Rainbow Pattern
Print out the printable rainbow pattern on different colored paper or use it to trace and cut out construction paper rainbows!  Place all colored objects in a plastic bin, cookie sheet, or deep bowl and cover with rice.  Hunt for the object and sort them onto the correct colored rainbow!
