Watermelon learning activities are my favorite as we move into summer themed learning! There are so many ways to set up learning centers, hands-on activities, and cooking & creating ideas with a watermelon theme. Watermelon as a snack is also usually a hit with preschoolers. During your watermelon or summer theme, adding in our free printable watermelon roll & color math activities will encourage number, counting, subitizing, and color skills at different learning levels!
Watermelon Roll & Color Math Activities
The watermelon roll & color math activities in this free printable set include 5 different leveled pages. Each page has a dice color code at the top and includes watermelons to color in according to the number rolled.
Download the pages from the pink button below. Print on white paper and make copies as needed.
Dice with dots or dice with numerals on them are needed for each of the watermelon roll & color math activities. Crayons, markers, colored pencils, or BINGO dotters can be used to color in the correct watermelon.
Roll a die, identify the number, and follow the directions on the page being used!
The included watermelon roll & color pages:
- rolling and coloring in any blank watermelon the correct color (1st picture above)
- rolling and coloring in the watermelon with the matching die the correct color (2nd picture below)
- rolling and coloring in the watermelon with the matching number the correct color (3rd picture below)
- rolling and coloring the watermelon with the same number of seed the correct color (4th picture below)
- rolling and tracing the matching number on the watermelon with the correct color (5th picture below)
Each watermelon roll & color option includes number and color skills. The color words on the page can be read by older preschoolers who work with high frequency words. We have the color words laminated on a piece of paper for my preschoolers to be able to carry around and use when reading and writing. This would be a great addition to the watermelon roll & color math activities, especially when being completed independently.
The first step for each roll & color page is to color each color word the correct color. This allows even the younger preschoolers to be successful! My preschoolers also love our shape roll & color printable.
Roll the die and count the dots. Some preschoolers will be able to use subitizing skills when looking at the number rolled on the die and will not need to actually count each dot.
Find the matching picture of the die on the page. Put your finger on it. Look at the color that the color word has been colored. (Ok, that sentence sounds odd, but you know what I mean!)
So if a 2 is rolled, touch the die with 2 dots on it, and see that the number 2 should be colored in orange. Find the 2, or 2 seeds, or the matching die on the page, and color it in orange!
When working with a small group in your classroom you will have the option to have everyone in the classroom complete the same watermelon roll & color page, or you can easily differentiate the learning levels and have certain preschoolers complete a specific page.
Or if you would like to use this more as an independent learning center, I would work with everyone on the roll & color page that has the blank watermelon. Teach your preschoolers how to color the color words, roll the die, and then color in the watermelon the correct color.
When they have figured out this page, it will be easier to introduce a more advanced version!
No matter which way you use the watermelon roll & color math activities, your preschoolers will benefit!
