The preschool year is winding down and summer is just around the corner! Summer brings pool parties, camp-outs, lazy days, and if your family is anything like ours…lots of watermelon! The Printable Watermelon Counting Cards {download at the end of the post} will fit into teaching about the letter Ww, numbers and counting, and any summer thematic unit.

Printable Watermelon Counting Cards
The counting cards can be used as an independent center in the classroom or as a busy bag at home. Print on cardstock, cut apart, and laminate (for extra durability). Add black play dough and you’re set! This is a low prep activity for preschoolers that can be adapted for home, in the classroom, or while waiting for dinner to come at a restaurant.
No matter what the watermelon seeds are made from, fine motor muscles will be working hard during this activity. Play dough will be pinched, pulled, and squished. Beads will be delicately pinched and picked up. Even buttons are tricky to get up from the table one at a time. As fine motor skills are strengthened, pre-writing skills are being practiced.
After the seeds are created and placed, have your preschooler point to count the seeds one last time! Double checking their work is great practice for harder math work in years to come. Extra practice is always a good thing!
It’s always nice to be able to link literature to our learning activities in preschool. The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli is a fun read about what could happen if you swallowed a watermelon seed! My preschoolers love this book! The discussions after reading it included a lot of super silly “what if” stories!
Included in the printable counting cards are toddler activity mats. These toddler mats do not have numbers on them at all. They were created for toddlers to simply add watermelon seeds too!
