Dinosaur Letter Tracing for Preschoolers

I am huge fan of learning without worksheets.  There are so many ways that young children, especially preschoolers, can learn essential skills without worksheets and flash cards.  Our Dinosaur Letter Tracing for preschoolers busy bag is a great example of this!  Practice letter formation, letter recognition, and even letter sounds without lifting a pencil.

Young children will stay engaged during this playful activity and you may even get a chance to make dinner or help older siblings with homework!  Busy bags and independent learning centers (like our Dinosaur Sorting Activity) are used in my preschool classroom each day.  And my own preschooler loves to learn through play too!

Dinosaur Letter Tracing for Preschoolers

  • small plastic dinosaur toys
  • cardstock
  • markers (these are my favorite!)
  • ring to store alphabet cards
I created this activity and then found another set of dinosaurs that I forgot we owned, so I created it again – even better the second time!
To put together the alphabet letter cards, I cut pieces of white cardstock in half.  I decided to keep the cards together as a set, so I punched holes in the corner of each letter card and hooked them all together with a metal ring.

Our set of dinosaurs included the colors orange, blue, red, and green, so I wrote the letters of alphabet in upper case form in a pattern of these colors.   This way the activity can also include color sorting and matching skills!
My absolute favorite set of markers for big writing is my Mr. Sketch markers.  If you don’t own them,  you need to!  They have skinny and wide sides to write with, so they make writing on chart paper easy as well as writing in thicker lines like on these cards.

After the alphabet letter cards are set, it’s time to play!
My preschooler LOVED this activity!  She is learning the correct way to form her letters this year in preschool, and she was thrilled to be able to practice with dinosaurs.  She chatted the whole way through the alphabet as she matched colors and traced letters.
And when the plastic dinosaurs were wobbly and wouldn’t stand up straight, she just laid them down on the lines of the letters!  Problem solved!

In preschool, we are planning a fun dinosaur theme this year!  I cannot wait to use this busy bag activity with my 3 year-olds later.  I’ll make multiple sets of the alphabet letter cards, so that more than one preschooler can play at a time.  We definitely have enough dinosaurs!
What’s great about activities like our Dinosaur Letter Tracing for preschoolers activity is that to play you don’t have to have mastered all your letters yet.  Exposure to skills in fun ways is important too!
