Make counting fun!
Keeping toddlers and preschoolers engaged while learning is easy to do with activities like our Pumpkin Seed Window Stickers! My preschoolers love to play on vertical surfaces. With reusable stickers, they can play over and over again while working on counting, strengthening fine motor muscles, and practicing 1:1 correspondence.
Pumpkin Seed Window Stickers
The supplies for this activity are so simple! You only need orange and white craft foam and water.
During the fall season, pre-cut craft foam pumpkins can be found at craft stores and sometimes the dollar store. If you can’t find pre-cut pumpkins, cut circles or pumpkin shapes from the orange foam.
Cut the pumpkin seeds from white craft foam. I cut seed (maybe more like raindrop) shapes from the craft foam. I made sure that the seeds were big enough to manipulate by little fingers, but small enough so that between 5 and 10 fit on one pumpkin easily.
Add just a little water to a container and drop the pumpkin and seed shapes into the water. Now it’s time to play!
The great thing about reusable window stickers is that you can play inside or outside! It’s still sunny and warm where we are, so playing outside works for us. But using the inside of a window works just as well. In fact, on a recent rainy day we moved this activity inside the backdoor of our classroom. When playing inside, definitely add less water to the container to lessen the risk of spills.
My preschoolers love these window stickers! Maybe it’s because they get to play in water or maybe it’s because to them it seems magical that the pumpkin and the seeds stick to the window.
During play, there is lots of counting going on! I encouraged my preschoolers to count each seed as it is placed on the pumpkin AND count backwards when the pumpkin seeds are taken off. Three year-olds are awesome and will gladly help each other, quiz each other, and encourage each other while playing and learning.
If you love simple activities as much as I do, definitely follow along by email in the subscription box at the top of the page!
