Crayon Color Puzzles
The crayon color puzzles can be printed from the pink button below. There are 10 crayon puzzles and one recording sheet included in the file.
Print the crayon puzzles on cardstock and consider laminating the set. Laminate before cutting the puzzles apart to allow the puzzles to be fit back together easily and correctly.
Place all of the puzzle pieces in a basket or on a tray. Have your preschoolers practice putting the puzzles together correctly before introducing the recording sheet.
For littler learners, use this math activity as a small group learning center. It may be easier for the younger preschoolers to work together. Have one preschooler put one puzzle together correctly and tell the group the color of the crayon. Then everyone in the group can find that same colored crayon and color in one crayon on the recording sheet.
Build another puzzle and color again.
For the older set of preschoolers, they may be able to work as partners or even independently.
Sometimes at a table full of 4 year-olds, it can get confusing when trying to find puzzles pieces that each preschooler has not put together and then colored yet. But I like to observe this kind of thinking and working in the classroom. I usually step back a little and see what can be worked out. I like to see the preschoolers who help each other…through frustration, lack of motivation, and feeling good about their own work.
It always makes me feel super proud of my preschoolers when they are acting like such big kids (with a side of teacher modeling too!).
There are only 6 crayons on the recording sheet for a reason. I know that some teachers and parents will only print the first page of crayon puzzles. These include the classic 6 colors – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. And only having 6 crayons to color also makes it easier when working in a group of preschoolers.
There will be extra puzzles to work with so no one should be waiting around for the next puzzle to put together.
No matter how these crayon puzzles are played, lots of big kid math skills are being used and practiced!
