Being Kind in Preschool {kindness quilt & bird feeder}

Valentine’s Day was the perfect time of year to focus on being kind with my preschoolers!  We focused on how kindness mattered to others we love.  The kids could come up with lots of ways that their mommies were kind to them, but it was harder for them to think of ways that they could be kind to their mommies!  After a few days, lots of books about hugs and kisses, and pointing out acts of kindness where ever we were at preschool, they started to really catch on.

We put together our class Kids For Kindness Quilt with each child’s individual way to show kindness to another person and sealed it with a high five!  Their ideas ranged from drawing a picture of my family, to giving a hug, to singing “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad.”  Each quilt piece was hung in our classroom quilt for everyone to enjoy!

The preschoolers also had a chance to do something kind for the animals in nature by making bird feeders!  Because it was so close to Valentine’s Day, the bird feeders were shaped into hearts before the kids added the cereal pieces.  The preschoolers strung their hearts with cereal and then I hooked the bottoms together and added a piece of twine.  They were quite impressed with their work and could not wait to get home to hang their bird feeders up.

Heart Bird Feeder Supplies

  • pipe cleaners
  • cereal (with holes in middle)
  • twine or string
Bend the pipe cleaners into a heart shape with the ends coming together at the point on the bottom.  Simply twist the ends together after the cereal is added to the bird feeder.  Add the twine through the middle of the heart and tie in a knot.  Hang the bird feeder in a tree near a window so you can enjoy seeing the birds eat from it!
