Short Vowel {CVC} Word Popcorn Game (free printable!)

Building words and practicing letter sounds is so fun with our Popcorn Word Game!

Older preschoolers and kindergarteners can use their letter sound skills to spell short vowel CVC {consonant-vowel-consonant} words.  These kind of words help build confidence in early readers because each sound is heard when saying and stretching the sounds.

Printable busy bags {or learning centers in the classroom} are a great way to simplify the work put into the activity.  Just print, laminate, and cut out the pieces!
HOW TO PLAY:
Hint:  To save ink, print just the first page of popcorn pieces only.  That page contains all the letters needed to build the words on the cards {even 2 m’s for mom!}
The Popcorn Word Game is set up for early readers to succeed!  The vowels are all printed in red, which matches the red square in the middle on each popcorn bag.  The red squares need red letters and the black squares need black letters!
Beginning Level Play – Set out only the popcorn pieces needed at first.  This will make it easier once the letter in the word is identified to find and place on the popcorn bag.  For example, if you set out only one popcorn bag, set out only the 3 letters (out of order) that are needed to spell the word.  Build up from there.  Set out 2 bags with those letters needed…and then 3.
Advanced Level Play – When your child is ready for more of a challenge, or has more of a grasp of identifying beginning, middle, and ending sounds, add all the popcorn pieces to sort through!  One at a time, let your child build the word on the popcorn bags.  Once one is spelled correctly, clear off the popcorn pieces and pick another!
When the word is spelled correctly, have your child point to each letter as she says the sound!

This printable Popcorn Word Game can be used in different ways!
  • Add velcro pieces to the back of the popcorn pieces and to the red and black squares on the popcorn bags.
  • Play this game on a metal cookie sheet!  Add small magnets to the back of the popcorn pieces.  When the pieces are placed on the black and red squares, they will stick!  This may be a fun option for the car.
  • Give the game a twist!  Print 2 sets of letters, cut them both out, and flip them over to create a letter memory game.
