Warm weather is coming! That must mean that the end of the school year is heading our way. One of my favorite themes to work with towards the end of the year is ice cream! Our ice cream alphabet match is the perfect literacy center to use with preschool and kindergarten kids. Practice matching uppercase and lowercase letters and create yummy ice cream treats!
Ice Cream Alphabet Match
This free printable set of ice cream alphabet scoops includes 26 uppercase ice cream scoops and 26 lowercase bowls.
The pages you will print are set up to make this extremely simple to prep! This is important to me, so I hope it is helpful to you too. I do not like to spend hours prepping activities! Print the file below and then laminate the pages. Cut the pieces apart on the gray dotted lines.
Time to Play
Setting the ice cream alphabet match game up can happen a few different ways.
I like to introduce activities like this in circle time with my entire preschool class at once. After we do that for a few days, I will move the literacy center to a table. I use small bright colored plastic bins for games like this. Put the uppercase ice cream scoops in one basket and the lowercase bowls in another.
Pick a few lowercase bowls to set up on the table. Sort through the uppercase ice cream scoops until the matches are found. Set those matches together on the table. Choose the next set of bowls to put on the table and play again!
The ice cream alphabet match can also be set up on a pocket chart. Place all of the lowercase bowls in the rows of the pocket chart. Add the uppercase ice cream scoops to a small basket or bin. Choose one ice cream scoop at a time to match to the correct bowl until all of the bowls are filled with ice cream.
At times I will also set up all of the lowercase bowls on a table. As the preschoolers come into the classroom in the morning, they are asked to match up all of the uppercase ice cream scoops together. It is a quick way to add a little more alphabet practice to the day!
No matter which way you play, lots of learning will happen! Simple literacy centers help preschoolers and kindergarteners practice and master early reading and writing skills without a lot of work on your end.
When you are done with the ice cream alphabet match, store the pieces in a reusable ziploc bag or a pencil pouch until it is time to play again!
