There is something about cupcakes at Valentine’s Day that just make me so happy! I do not think I am a huge box of chocolates kind of person. Biting into unknown flavors of chocolates is not exactly my favorite thing. But a cupcake with chocolate frosting (yum!) and some decorative heart sprinkles is right up my alley for sure! This is why I am loving our new heart cupcakes color matching preschool printable math activity. Add this learning activity to your February theme so that your preschoolers can work on color skills in such a fun, inviting way!

Heart Cupcakes Color Matching
The set of heart cupcakes color matching printable can be downloaded at the pink button below. Print the file on cardstock and consider laminating the set to make the pieces more durable.
Cut the cupcake and heart cards apart on the gray dotted lines. If you have a paper cutter, definitely use it!
Use a single hole punch to poke a hole in the right and left side of each card. When punching the hole, be use to leave enough space between the edge of the card and the hole, so that it does not easily rip.
Place the cupcake cards on the table or on a tray.
Add the heart cards to a bowl or place in a pile.
The only other supply that’s needed for the heart cupcakes color matching activity is plastic chain links. If you have not invested in a set of the chain links, consider adding this set to your preschool classroom. We use them all the time for added fine motor work!
You can also use pipe cleaner pieces to link the cards together. You would need to snip the pipe cleaner into shorter lengths to make it easy for a preschooler’s hands to link and bend each one through the holes.
The goal of the activity is to link the same colored hearts to the cupcake as the heart on the cupcake. So the cupcake with the green heart will have green hearts linked to it.
You can set this up as a table activity where all the preschoolers at the table work together to identify the colors of the hearts, and then to sort and link them to the matching cupcake. Or this can be a tray activity, which would be set up for one preschooler to play at a time.
If I were setting this up for just one child to play, I would probably split the cupcakes and hearts into 2 trays. This way, the tray would become overwhelming with trying to find and sort and link to too many cupcakes at once!
No matter which way you set up the heart cupcakes to play, color recognition, matching skills, and fine motor work are all being encouraged and practiced.
